Project Overview

The Gerald Roberts Road Upgrade project represents a significant stride in advancing road safety, enhancing accessibility, and fortifying the connectivity within the local community and businesses. A collaborative venture of the South Australian government and the Light Regional Council, this project is funded under the Special Local Roads Program.

Our project aims to provide an optimal level of service, accommodating designated freight and commuting traffic throughout the region. The initiative involved constructing a new 5km road  between Seppeltsfield Road and Gomersal Road, along with upgrading two major intersections at each end to support a 26.5m B Double Road Train.

Jakelco Contracting accomplished the main project within six months, whereas the DIT Gerald Roberts Road and Gomersal Road intersection is currently under construction, with civil works slated to be completed by the end of June 2023.

Objectives

The paramount objective of the Gerald Roberts Road Upgrade project was to establish a strategic route for residents and visitors traveling within the Barossa Wine Region. This region encapsulates several popular tourist destinations and economic hubs including Tanunda, Seppeltsfield, Lyndoch, Rosedale, and Gawler.

Moreover, the road upgrade is projected to engender a safer road environment, significantly diminishing the probability of head-on and side-swipe road incidents.

Scope of Work

The scope of the project involved the construction of approximately 5km of undivided sealed rural road, including sealed shoulders and intersection upgrades within a new road reserve between Seppeltsfield Road and Gomersal. The detailed scope of work included:

  • 15,000m3 of earthworks, including clear and grub of intersections, stripping topsoil and stockpiling, bulk earthworks cut to fill, placing and compaction of fill, drainage swales, batter trimming, and spreading of topsoil.
  • Drainage works, including trenching, preparing subgrade and blinding, installation of different size of reinforced concrete pipes and box culverts, and associated headwalls.
  • 42,000m2 of pavement works, including the placement and compaction of various subbase and basecourse materials. Supply and installation of over 26000T pavement materials.
  • Subcontract management of sealing company to undertake around 36000m2 spray seal and 1000T asphalt works.
  • Traffic management at Gerald Roberts Road & Gomersal Road Intersection upgrade, with an AADT of 4000 vehicles/day on Gomersal Road.
  • Managed several subcontractors, including Downer (sealing) for a contract value of $600k, Penrice Quarry (rubble supply) for a contract value of $1 million, Zancott Traffic (traffic control) for a contract value of $150k and Action Linemarking (line marking) for a contract value of $50k.
  • Dilapidation Survey and Dust Control with 2 watertrucks on site during construction
  • Managed major stakeholders, including Seppeltsfield Winery, Hentley Farm and numerous vineyards, and the local community.
  • Supply and installation of linemarking, safety barriers, and signage
