Project Overview

The Princes Highway Rest Area project involved the construction of a new rest area at Salt Creek to provide a safe, functional and accessible facility for highway users. The project incorporated a range of civil, pavement, drainage and ancillary works required to establish the rest area and associated infrastructure.

The works included bulk earthworks, transportation and placement of fill and pavement materials, construction of pavement subbase and basecourse layers, drainage installation and pavement sealing. The project also included installation of toilet facilities and associated road furniture and site amenities.

Objectives

The project was delivered with a focus on safety, quality, durability and functionality, providing improved facilities for motorists and heavy vehicle operators travelling along the Princes Highway. The completed rest area contributes to safer and more convenient highway travel by providing an appropriately constructed facility for road users to stop, rest and access essential amenities.

Scope of Work

The construction of a new rest area included earthworks, pavement construction, drainage, sealing and associated facilities and road infrastructure.
The key scope of works included:

  • Site preparation and earthworks, including clearing, excavation, filling, grading and formation preparation.
  • Transportation and placement of fill materials to establish the required site levels and formation.
  • Pavement construction, including supply, placement, grading and compaction of subbase and basecourse materials.
  • Drainage installation to provide effective collection and management of stormwater across the rest area.
  • Toilet installation and associated civil works required to establish the rest area facilities.
  • Pavement sealing to provide a durable and safe surface for vehicles and pedestrians.
  • Ancillary works, including installation of guideposts, signage and line marking.
  • Vegetation management, including removal and trimming of existing vegetation within the construction area.
  • Final grading, finishing and reinstatement works to complete the rest area and surrounding areas.
  • Implementation of appropriate traffic management, safety and environmental controls throughout construction.
  • Quality control and testing of earthworks, pavement, drainage and sealing works to ensure compliance with DIT requirements and project specifications.

Overall, the scope covered the complete civil construction requirements for the new rest area, from site preparation and earthworks through to pavement construction, drainage, sealing, facilities and final ancillary works.

Innovations and Strategies

The project utilised coordinated construction sequencing, efficient material management and integrated drainage and pavement works to maximise construction efficiency and minimise rework. Proactive traffic, safety, quality and environmental management supported safe delivery within the active highway environment, while progressive completion of facilities and ancillary works ensured an efficient project handover.

Conclusion

The project successfully delivered a new, safe and functional rest area at Salt Creek. The $2 million project incorporated earthworks, pavement construction, drainage, sealing, toilet facilities and associated road infrastructure.

Through effective construction planning, material management, quality control and traffic management, the project provided a durable and practical facility that improves safety, accessibility and convenience for road users travelling along the Princes Highway.
